Too cold for rafting? Head to Texas and the whitewater of the Rio Grande for some all-season desert river rafting. Venture down the whitewater of the Rio Grande River's Big Bend. Experience the 189 miles of Class I-IV rapids. Difficult access to this remote stretch of river make this recommended for the physically fit only. These sections, Canyons of Big Bend National Park and Lower Canyons, pass through Big Bend National Park, and are located in southwest Texas, south of Alpine, on the United States-Mexico border. Big Bend whitewater rafting offers something for every level of experience and there are several options depending on what kind of trip you are looking for. The most scenic route is through Santa Elena Canyon. Picture limestone cliffs plunging straight into the rushing blue and white water. Add some wildflowers and snap the 15mega-pixel photo. The rapids in the Santa Elena Canyon part are quite tame and recommended for families. Another popular route for whitewater rafting in Big Bend National Park is Colorado Canyon, which can be done in one day or two.
Practical Info: Rafting season is open year round, with whitewater rafting trips ranging in length from a day trip up to 10 days. Popular trips include the 105 mile Big Bend section, and the 84 mile Lower Canyons section. The river is suitable for paddle rafts, oar rafts, and inflatable kayaks. Portage may be required.
Useful Tips: Guides are optional, although permits may be required for private trips, and whitewater experience is recommended.
Expect to See: An environment of wilderness, and canyons.
