Our Sports Superfan Says:

Originally built to be the home of what is now the second longest-running college bowl game, the Sun Bowl is also the home of a Division I-A team and an annual all-star game, in addition to its bowl.

The Sun Bowl game has been played annually since 1935, and has been played at its current venue since 1963. Currently, the game is held on or around (but not after) New Year's Eve. In recent years, the game has been particularly high-scoring, and features teams from major conferences. The stadium, which has an artificial surface, is the home field of the University of Texas-El Paso's football team. It also hosted an amateur soccer team, the El Paso Patriots, for awhile from 1998-2001.

In 2007, the stadium added a new game: the Texas vs. The Nation Game. It is one of college football's postseason all-star games. The game pits players who went to school in Texas against players from the rest of the United States.

The stadium was originally constructed with a capacity of 30,000, but that was expanded to over 51,000 in 1982. The Sun Bowl is located on the campus of UTEP, and is less than a mile from the Rio Grande and the border with Mexico. UTEP currently owns both the stadium and the land it sits on.
