The dramatic Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument lies in the middle of the scenic Gila National Forest. A guided tour is a great way to see the Cliff Dwellings and caves but you won't regret wandering around the park at your own pace either. Mule deer and elk are commonly spotted in the park and less commonly visitors report black bear, Mexican gray wolf, and mountain lion sightings. Take a hike in the Gila and Aldo Leopold Wilderness areas and stop for a dip in one of the popular hot springs just about a mile hike from the Visitor Center.
The park also has great options for horseback riding, fishing, bird watching, nature walks, camping, and many other activities.
From Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument - New Mexico:
Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument offers a glimpse of the homes and lives of the people of the Mogollon culture who lived in the Gila Wilderness from the 1280s through the early-1300s. The surroundings probably look today very much like they did when the cliff dwellings were inhabited. It is surrounded by the Gila National Forest and lies in the middle of the Gila Wilderness, the nation's first designated wilderness area. Wilderness designation means that the wilderness character of the area will not be altered by the intrusion of roads or other evidence of human presence.
