The peaceful resolution of an international crisis is remembered through the beautiful outdoors at the Chamizal National Monument in El Paso, Texas. The Chamizal National Monument commemorates the peaceful resolution of the Chamizal border dispute between America and Mexico. Today, the 55-acre Chamizal National Monument offers ranger-guided and self-guided walking and educational tours.
From 1895 to 1963, a minor difference between an 1852 survey of the Rio Grande riverbed and the then current channel caused tensions between the United States and Mexico over the actual route of the border. In January 1963, the dispute was finally resolved, with both sides agreeing to a set of recommendations from 1911 and all sides satisfied. The Chamizal National Monument was authorized in 1966 and established in 1974.
The Chamizal National Monument offers visitors plenty of opportunities to learn the historical significance of the site. The ranger-guided talks of the monument last between 45 minutes to an hour and cover the history of the dispute and how the countries arrived at a resolution. The Cordova Island Trail at the Chamizal National Monument is a 1.8-mile trail encircling the site, with astounding views of Franklin and Juarez Mountains and the El Paso skyline. After their experience at the Chamizal National Monument, visitors can find a variety of restaurants in nearby El Paso, including everything from fast food to Mexican cuisine.
To get to the Chamizal National Monument, turn from I-10 south onto Highway 54, then follow the signs to the monument.
