Family Travel around White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns and Alamogordo, New Mexico
A family vacation in the Southeast corner on New Mexico will definitely involve a lot of time in the car, but there are several unique attractions of interest both to adults and families traveling with kids. Alamogordo, New Mexico make a convenient base for exploring the area, including three attractions that kids and adults will not forget:
- The hands-on introduction to space flight and the wonders of outer space at the New Mexico Museum of Space History, which includes simulators, an IMAX Dome Theater and Planetarium and space vehicles.
White Sands National Monument, about 20 minutes to the west of Alamagordo, will provide a few hours of fun on a New Mexico family vacation. An endless sea of fine white gypsum makes for a great playground and a unique hiking, or just rolling around and jumping, experience.
Carlsbad Caverns, looks pretty close on the map, but is over 3 hours to the east and worth the trip. The cave system is one of the most impressive in the United States and is and is an easily accessible attraction on the non-spelunking family vacation. The trail is paved and there is an elevator out at the end, but the caverns definitely rate among the wonders of nature. If you are around at sunset in the summer months, don't miss the million or so bats heading out of the cave for a night of dining on the fine insects of New Mexico.

El Paso makes an interesting stop on a family vacation in the area, giving kids a taste of Mexico in this pretty remote corner of Texas. For more than just a taste, walk over the bridge to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. You are guaranteed to come back with some gifts for friends and family back home.
