Adventure Travel in Big Bend National Park, West Texas
Big Bend National Park makes a varied destination for a multi-day backcountry trek or even for shorter day hiking. A few days hiking or biking in Big Bend may take you from mountain peaks, through desert landscape to the Rio Grande in one of the more deserted corners of Texas. The Rio Grande, forming the border between Mexico and the United States is so far away from civilization that the border patrol doesn't even bother looking for people illegally crossing the border.
For a true backcountry experience, there are over 160 miles of dirt roads for some moderate to strenuous biking.
Adventure Vacation in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas
Not far (in Texas terms, meaning about 100 miles) from El Paso, Guadalupe Mountains National Park is a remote wilderness area suited for backcountry camping and hiking. The two main trails of interest are:
- The hike to the 8749ft top of Texas at Guadalupe Peak - an 8.4 mile strenuous, but well marked, day hike.
- The McKittrick Canyon Trail crosses open desert and forest and is 4.8 to 6.8 miles of moderate, round trip hiking.
Cave Adventures in Southeastern New Mexico
Carlsbad Caverns, is of course, the most popular cave in the area and one of the most in the United States. The self-guided tour covers some amazing underground scenery, but hardly qualifies as an “adventure”. National Park rangers offer guided tours, some of which are more primitive. The Hall of the White Giant Tour, involves some climbing and crawling, but is still pretty tame. The Guadalupe Ranger District of Lincoln National Forest contains limestone caves which can be visited by permit-only.
