Our Sports Superfan Says:
By the mid-1990s, Buffalo Memorial Auditorium ("The Aud") was becoming run down, and shiny new HSBC Arena was built to take its place. The home of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League, as well as the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League, HSBC has also hosted NCAA basketball tournament games, NCAA hockey games, pro wrestling events, and concerts.
The Sabres' most memorable event at the arena has actually been a defeat. In 1999, the Sabres reached their first ever Stanley Cup Finals. But in Game 6 against the Dallas Stars, Dallas' Brett Hull scored a controversial triple-overtime goal which sent a dagger into the collective hearts of Buffalo fans. It has been debated to this day whether or not Hull was legally in the goal crease when he scored. Buffalo natives still refer to the game as "No Goal." Another ignominious moment for HSBC Arena came in 1996, its first year of operation. Prior to the start of a Sabres-Boston Bruins game, the enormous jumbotron scoreboard fell to the ice while it was being moved into place. Luckily no one was injured, as practice had just ended, but that night's game was postponed.
HSBC Arena holds 18,690 for hockey, which can be expanded for basketball and concerts. It is also the home of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, and has all the usual modern arena amenities of specialty restaurants, bars, and interactive exhibitions.
Located in downtown Buffalo, several buses are available for getting to HSBC Arena, including the 6C and 8A.
