Our Museum Expert Says:

Located in Corning, in the historic 1893 City Hall building near Corning's historic Market Street, the Rockwell Museum of Western Art is not, as you might have thought, about Norman Rockwell, but rather a fun museum featuring such exhibitions as The Myth of the West, Buffalo and Horses, Indians, Cowboys, and The Southwest. The Museum was founded in 1976 with an initial large donation of art by Robert and Hertha Rockwell. The museum was created with the philosophy that the Museum should be an engaging and fun place for people to visit, and so it is. The galleries are organized by themes, rather than dates or artists, and the wall texts invite visitors to challenge old stereotypes and explore new concepts about America and the West.

The Rockwell Museum's extensive collection of 19th and 20th century art is rotated regularly through its galleries. Visitors can see the works of Remington, Russell, Dallin, Sharp, Dunton, Moran, and many more. Because the art is organized by themes, works from different eras and styles are mixed together, making for a stimulating experience. The Museum's comfortable Western living room is filled with favorite drawings and sculptures alongside fine Native American crafts and firearms. You can sit right down, relax, and peruse art books and magazines. In Art Packs, younger children can find activities to do on their own, while the older kids tend to prefer exploring the cowboy and horse themes of the main exhibits. When you're ready to refuel, hit the Cantina, which serves up Southwestern fare at tasty prices. The museum is located at 111 Cedar Street in Corning's historic Market Street district.
