Spend the afternoon with Monet, Matisse and the original Homer! The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester is filled with art that spans centuries and genres, and is a wonderful way to enjoy the Rochester region!
Considered one of the finest regional art museums in the country, the Memorial Art Gallery's permanent collection of 11,000 works spans 50 centuries of world art and includes masterworks by artists such as Monet, Cézanne, Homer and Cassatt. From medieval to contemporary art, the gallery boasts the best in 17th- to 19th-century European art, from Rubens to Rembrandt and Matisse, complete with a beautiful central gallery and a skylight over the museum's collection of 20th-century sculpture, a pleasant place to relax and take it all in. The Memorial Art Gallery even hosts traveling world-class exhibitions, as well as its own varied permanent collection which includes the cutting edge of avant-garde art, interactive displays, and contemporary crafts exhibits from the local artists. There are audio guides available to enhance your experience, and if visiting with kids, the Gill Discovery Center features an interactive installation on Ancient Egypt for families.
Should you care for a bite to eat, drop by Cutler's Restaurant, with its excellent seasonal menu, or enjoy a meal surrounded by original works of art on the stylish Upper Terrace. To get to the gallery, take the NYS Thruway (I-90) to Exit 46, I-390 North to Exit 16 (W. Henrietta Rd.), cross W. Henrietta to E. River Rd., right onto Kendrick Rd., then right onto Elmwood Ave.
