Our History Buff Says:

Visit the original site of Teddy Roosevelt's inauguration and a moving and memorable piece of American history!

Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site preserves the Ansley Wilcox House, where after the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office as President. The oldest part of the site includes the lone surviving structure from the Buffalo Barracks compound, which was originally constructed to ensure border security between the U.S. and Canada. The house, now a museum, includes a number of restored rooms, as well as an exhibit room, a gift shop, and a large room upstairs that features changing exhibits and art shows. The restored library on the first floor, the room in which Roosevelt took his oath, has been restored and includes many original books and furnishings. Visitors should allot one hour for the guided museum tour, which includes a brief audio-visual orientation which shows a realistic reenactment of the event. Before you plan your visit, be sure to check out dates for special programs including the Victorian Christmas Celebration, the Teddy Bear Picnic, Mother/Daughter Teas, and other exhibits relating to the Roosevelts or to American presidency.

The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site is located at 641 Delaware Avenue between North and Allen Streets in Buffalo, NY. To get there, take I-90 to exit 51 (Route 33 West). Take Route 33 West (Kensington Expressway) to the downtown area. Get off at the Goodell Street exit and follow signs to Delaware Avenue. Have a good time at this inaugural site of one of our beloved presidents!
