Letchworth State Park

Things to do / Travel Guide

Our Leaf Peeper Says:

Letchworth State Park is a popular Western New York State destination – fall, winter, spring, summer and fall (we said it twice) and a great diversion on the way to Niagara Falls. Centrally located between Buffalo / Niagara Falls and the Finger Lakes, travelers are surprised to find such an impressive canyon this side of the Grand Canyon. Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East", Portage Canyon and the Genesee RiverGorge are especially beautiful in the fall. The 600 foot multi-colored cliffs are backed by a deep forest that turns red, orange and yellow peaking during the first three weeks of October.

While Letchworth State Park fall foliage is worth a trip, the park offers a wide range of natural, historical and active attractions. The park is most crowded during the summer, when the campgrounds are in full swing and hikers are enjoying the trails and the three waterfalls. Look for Inspiration Falls, the highest in New York State, which at 350 feet is higher than Niagara Falls. But it is only a foot wide, when it is running. Spring witnesses the rebirth of Letchworth State Park foliage and winter brings cross country skiing to this corner of New York State. The park was created from the estate of William Pryor Letchworth. We mention that since the mansion now functions as an Inn. Even if you are staying elsewhere, stop by the historic Glen Iris Inn for a meal in a rustic setting. And then head back to your cabin or campground, conveniently near located the Perry entrance. Please note there is a minimum one week stay in most cabins.

Remember - Letchworth State Park peak viewing is usually during the first three weeks of October. Check local weather and foliage reports.
