Things to do / Travel Guide
After a long car ride or a more low-key outing, when the kids need to expend some extra energy, head to one of western New York and south-central Ontario's kid-friendly parks. Here you'll find imaginative play structures and playgrounds, as well as wide-open spaces for running games and picnics. And if you're lucky, you may just catch a puppet show or concert in Toronto's public parks.
Western New York
- Seneca Park (also home to the Seneca Park Zoo) in Rochester, New York (NY) is a 297-acre park featuring Trout Lake and a play area and playground for children.
Niagara Falls
- All over the Niagara Falls area, on either side of the river, there are recreational parks where you can picnic, relax, let your kids loose. On the Ontario side there are picnic areas all along Niagara Parkway. On the New York side a great place to stretch out your blanket is on Goat Island.
Toronto
- The Toronto Music Garden is a horticultural representation of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello. Each musical movement is represented as a different type of garden. Here children can listen to music and run and play amidst forest groves, wildflower meadows and giant grass. The Toronto Music Garden is located near the Harbourfront, on Queen's Quay West.
- Dufferin Grove Park on Dufferin Street in Toronto has a playground, community-run garden and is located in a historic tree grove. The park occasionally has public puppet shows and other kinds of performing arts presentations.
- Toronto's High Park, on Parkside Drive off Bloor Street West, is the largest park in Toronto and features beautiful landscaping and horticultural art, a children's garden and fantastic adventure “dream” playground.
