Nature and Wildlife in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Western New York and Ontario

Things to do / Travel Guide

The Finger Lakes region and Toronto's Ward Island, Centre Island, and Hanlan's Point Island, are superb places at which to escape the gray, pavement-bound realities of city-life, and bird-watch, or simply relish in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature.

Western New York (NY)

Forested with oak, maple, chestnut, ash beech, and hemlock trees, the western New York and Finger Lakes region is a wooded paradise. The eleven glacial Finger Lakes and their tributaries teem with lake trout, lake-locked salmon, smallmouth and largemouth bass, panfish, and literally hundreds of other fish species.
Common in the region are the heron, red-tailed hawks, turkey vultures, and elegant cranes of all varieties. Western NY is home to five well-known nature centers, a bird sanctuary, and two wildlife refuges.

At Sapsucker Woods in Ithaca, NY, near Lake Cayuga's southern tip, bird-watching is at its very best. Sapsucker Woods is a 200-acre bird sanctuary with a large feeding garden and four miles of trails, along which you will easily spot many nesting and migrating birds. It features a glass-walled observatory facing a 10-acre pond, affording a perfect view of an astounding variety of the waterfowl that soar past.

Toronto

The three Toronto islands provide a magical wildlife oasis within the Toronto metro area. It's a marvel that so close to an urban hub, such a wide assortment of plants and flowers grow wild. On Toronto's islands you can spot milkweed and goldenrod, foxgloves, and marsh marigolds, as well as hooded ladies' tresses, northern green bog (an orchid), Kalm's lobelia, and marsh bellflower. Bird enthusiasts, you'll also be pleasantly surprised: watch mallard ducks, owls, Canadian geese, black-crowned night-herons, and other waterfowl.
