A wide variety of accommodation options are available to the traveler in the region of western New York and south-central Ontario. Budget and luxury lodging is available throughout the region, and clean, comfortable mid-range hotels are also easy to come by. While Toronto (particularly downtown and at the Harbourfront) is certainly the priciest in the region when it comes to accommodations, it is also possible to manage the city on a tighter budget.
Western New York
You may want to try a historic luxury inn situated in one of western New York's historic landmark sites. These boutique-style (sometimes even palatial) lodging in East Aurora, Chautauqua, Geneva, and Ithaca provide a pampered stay amidst florid architecture and decor. Rates, including breakfast, run between $120-$500.
Accessible and adequate bed and breakfasts (B&Bs), budget motels, and roadside motor lodges are available in nearly every large town or city throughout western New York and at convenient distances from the Finger Lakes. Prices range from $50-90, including a continental breakfast. Mid-range hotels and historic inns are available in Geneva, Canandaigua, Farmington, and Naples, and cost around $100-$120 a night.
An excellent selection of campgrounds can be found in western New York's state parks. Many of these sites also offer winterized cabins or more remote rustic wilderness sites.
Niagara Falls
A wide range of Niagara Falls hotels are available on both the Canadian and U.S. sides. High-rise hotels on prime Falls-view real estate will run quite a bit higher than those without views. Also, off-season is substantially cheaper than on-season. On the New York side, the major hotels can be found in the city of Niagara Falls, on Main Street, Niagara Falls Boulevard, and Buffalo Avenue. They don't run more than around $120. Probably the only exception to this is the Seneca Niagara Spa Hotel & Casino, on 4th Street, which starts at over $200. B&Bs are available in the same areas and run between $80 and $120. Finally, for an outdoors alternative to a New York hotel, visitors can go camping at Niagara Falls Campground and Lodging, on Niagara Falls Boulevard.
On the Canadian side of the Falls things get a bit pricier, but not too much if you take into account the power of the U.S. dollar. On-season Niagara Falls hotel accommodations can be had for around $150-160. There are two distinct areas for the priciest and most luxurious hotels - Clifton Hill and Fallsview. Stay in one of the Clifton Hill hotels for a neon rush, or stay in the Fallsview area for a more posh experience. A few blocks away, budget motels abound. B&Bs run for a little cheaper, and many are located on River Road and Niagara Parkway, right on the Niagara River. There are plenty of places for campgrounds as well, right in the area.
If there is one time in your travels that you should spring a few more dollars for a room with a view - this is the place. Begging the check-in clerk may work as well, especially if you are on your honeymoon.
Toronto
Like every major metro area, the range of lodging options in Toronto is limitless. You'll generally pay more to stay near the Entertainment District and the Harbourfront. During the winter, however, hotel prices throughout Toronto come down.
While several basic budget two- and three-star hotels are available in the downtown and trendy neighborhoods of Toronto, if you want to save money on lodgings a good way is to stay somewhere in Toronto's outskirts, either at a motel or a B&B. You can expect to pay between $60-100 a night at one of these mid-range options.
