Things to do / Travel Guide
The western New York area of our region can be imagined as a canopy pinned upon the cities of Syracuse, Rochester, and Niagara Falls, all of which touch or nearly touch the shores of Lake Ontario. This canopy drapes down from Syracuse to Ithaca, basically along the highway I-81. The Finger Lakes are all included, the eastern-most one being Otisco Lake. Beneath Seneca Lake are the cities of Elmira and Corning.
After Keuka Lake from the west, the remaining Finger Lakes are much smaller and towards the north. The canopy covers these, and then skirts along to Buffalo.
Buffalo is located on the northeastern-most tip of Lake Erie. The city is directly south of Niagara Falls on the border between the U.S. and Canada. Lakes Erie and Ontario, from the south and north respectively, carve out between them a sort of land-bridge, entirely on the side of Canada. At the eastern entrance to this bridge are, as we said, Buffalo and Niagara Falls.
Our region traces the northern shore of the land-bridge, along Lake Ontario, until it hits the cities of Hamilton and Burlington. At this point Ontario's shoreline doubles back, and finally we reach, after lots of hopefully-helpful map-talk, the charming and fun-loving city of Toronto.
