Things to do / Travel Guide
- Buffalo, NY has three interesting claims to fame: Buffalo wings were served for the first time ever at the Anchor Bar on Main Street in 1964; Buffalo was the first city in the U.S. to have electric street-lights; and the windshield wiper was invented in Buffalo.
- Rochester, NY is home to the largest deaf population in the United States. The city is host to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and there have been deaf institutions there since the early 1820s.
- Brave (and arguably lunatic) individuals from around the world have attempted Niagara Fall's treacherous waters by crossing them on tightrope, riding them in barrels, and performing “stunt” falls into the frothy water. Not all have survived. One such daredevil crossed the Niagara Falls on a tightrope carrying a small stove. He stopped in the middle, lit a fire, and cooked two omelets!
- Toronto holds the Guinness World Record for the longest street: Yonge Street stretches 1,178 miles, from Toronto's harbor all the way to the Minnesota border.
- Toronto's PATH 10-kilometer underground city, is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the “Biggest Underground Shopping Complex.”
- Toronto's SkyDome is enormous: both the Roman Coliseum and St. Paul's Cathedral could nestle cozily within its dimensions!
- Many blockbuster movies have been filmed in Toronto, including Home Alone, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and X-Men, among countless others.
