Things to do / Travel Guide
You'll find the most exciting entertainment and nightlife in the western New York and south-central Ontario region in Canada's largest metropolis - Toronto.
Toronto
Renowned for its diverse cultural venues and performing arts, professional theater district, happening nightclubs, and live music entertainment, Toronto's entertainment scene is guaranteed to impress even the most jaded city slicker. Tickets for the best performances can cost anywhere from $18-$90, from low-end to high-end, and are nearly always worth the expense.
Nearly all of the best entertainment venues are clustered in downtown Toronto's Entertainment District, one of North America's most diverse downtown neighborhoods and home to sporting facilities, nightclubs, attractions, and top-notch live theaters. “The District” covers eight square blocks between York Street and the Financial District on the east, Queen Street on the north, and Spadina Avenue and the Fashion District on the west. Toronto's Entertainment District is easily accessible by all forms of transportation.
Toronto is recognized as the third-largest theater center in the English-speaking world (just behind New York and London), and the Entertainment District is a theater mecca. For blockbuster musicals, Broadway productions and live drama, you might want to check out two of the more famous venues: The historic Royal Alexandra Theatre and the Princess of Wales Theatre.
The Roger Centre and Air Canada Centre (home also to the Toronto Raptors basketball team and Maple Leafs hockey team) are favorite locations for large music concerts. The Hummingbird Centre features the widely-acclaimed Canadian Opera Company. For live-music headliners, try Toronto's Massey Hall and Roy Thompson Hall.
Niagara Falls and Vicinity
This area's big draw, aside from the Falls themselves, can be found on the Canadian side - the Clifton Hill promenade in Niagara City, Ontario. Nightlife and entertainment is mainly family-oriented, and includes Ripley's Believe It or Not, the Guinness World Records Museum, Louis Tussaud's Waxworks, mini-golf, and plenty of restaurants, hotels, and other fun things.
Western New York
The cities of Buffalo and Rochester, NY have mid-size entertainment scenes that occasionally attract big-name performers and headlines. In Buffalo, head to West Chippewa Street, between Main Street and South Elmwood Avenue. Here you'll find nightclubs, restaurants, popular pubs, and coffeehouses. Bohemian Allentown, on Allen Street is also a popular entertainment district.
Ithaca is a college town, with both Cornell University and Ithaca College, so you can expect plenty of night activities. There are coffee houses, dance spots, theater, and more. There is also a great venue for concerts.
