Our History Buff Says:

Take a ride up the Monongahela Incline, a cliffside cable car that brings passengers up Mt. Washington for spectacular views of Pittsburgh.

The Monongahela Incline was built German immigrants in 1870 who had established a community for themselves along the sides of Mt. Washington, in Coal Hill. At the time, these inclines were extremely popular; the Monongahela Incline became the first of 17 inclines in Pittsburgh, of which only the Monongahela Incline and the Duquesne Incline remain.

The Monongahela Incline is now a regular part of Pittsburgh's transit system and connects with the light rail and with buses. It's located near the Smithfield Street Bridge, across from Station Square (great shopping and nice restaurants on the water). Once you've reached the top of Mt. Washington (after about a ten minute ride), you'll have some of the best restaurant and shops at your fingertips as well as some gorgeous views of the city below you. And the best part? It only costs a few dollars to go up and down the incline, so even if you just plan on spending an hour or two up there, it's definitely worth your money! P.S. The natives call it "the Mon" since Monongahela Incline can be quite a mouthful!
