Open-minded art lovers rejoice! Enjoy contemporary installation art that is one of few museums of its kind anywhere.
Since 1977, the Mattress Factory has supported over 300 artists through their world-renowned residency program. The art in the Mattress Factory is exhibited in room-sized environments created by in-residence artists who come to Pittsburgh each year to live at the museum and create new work. During their stay, the museum supports the artists completely while they experiment and explore the creative process. Today there are 16 permanent installations on continuous display, including works by James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama, Greer Lankton, Bill Woodrow and William Anastasi. The museum is located in the historic Mexican War Streets of Pittsburgh's North Side, and the unusual galleries are located in two creatively reused buildings. The museum offers art labs for teens as well as programs for low income kids aged 14-18. Tours are available for groups with advance notice. The MF Café offers delicious soups, salads, specialty entrees, pizzas and sandwiches from M Catering, along with unique desserts from Vanilla Pastry Studio if you're looking for a bite to eat while perusing the installations. There are many bus routes that will bring you to the Mattress Factory, located at 500 Sampsonia Way. so there's no excuse to miss this sensational collection of boundary-breaking art!
