A storehouse of time, Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center on Smallman Street is a seven-story converted warehouse with over 1,000 artifacts and photos expertly displayed to make southwestern Pennsylvania's history accessible and interesting. The exhibits span the period from 1750, through Pittsburgh's industrial era, and on into the present. The center is associated with the Smithsonian and is the largest history museum in Pennsylvania.
Kids will enjoy "Discovery Place" taking them back 100 years or more to work in a steel mill or pilot a steamboat. Sports fans will enjoy viewing Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers memorabilia in the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum at the Center. Celebrate the Pirates most recent World Champion Season as if it was just yesterday (It actually was in 1979, folks). There are permanent exhibits on glass and iron manufacturing and local history. And if you look hard enough, you will find some Ketchup and Pickle history and art on display, certainly in the gift shop.
