Our Museum Expert Says:

Established in 1969 at the behest of Henry Clay Frick's daughter Helen to house the renowned collection of fine decorative art, the Frick Art & Historical Center in Pittsburgh, is a stunning complex of museums and historical gardens located on five acres of lawn and gardens.

The restored Frick house serves as the cornerstone of the complex and provides a most intimate setting to view the collections. Paintings, porcelains, bronzes, and rare examples of 17th and 18th century furniture are beautifully on display. Highlights include a portrait by Rubens, a pastoral scene by Boucher, and Italian panel paintings by Giovanni de Paolo and Sassetta.

Temporary exhibits change monthly and include such displays as financier's J. Pierpont Morgan's collection that includes a large group of Renaissance and Baroque bronzes, rare Chinese and Meissen porcelains, and further fine examples of 18th century furniture.

Visitors to the Frick Art & Historical Center are encouraged to walk the grounds, or stop in and visit the Car and Carriage Museum or the Greenhouse. The Car and Carriage Museum houses many of the Frick's personal automobile collection.

The museum's café offers distinctive soups and salads, gourmet specialties and delectable desserts from a palette of fresh seasonal ingredients, many of which are grown on the grounds themselves.

The museum's store is also very lovely with books on local history, art, exhibition catalogs, decorative items, personal accessories, toys, books and stuffed animals for children.

The Frick Art & Historical Center is located approximately 20 minutes east of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and can be reached by taking busses 67A, C, E, F, 71C, 74.

It was Helen Frick's dying wish that the collection should be on display to the public upon her passing and is truly a beautiful way to spend the day.
