It is rather fitting that the memorial of a man whose legacy was linked to bottles and jars, would comprise almost 250,000 pieces of glass. Heinz Memorial Chapel, dedicated to H.J. Heinz and his children (yes, the Heinz family of the internationally-known Heinz Ketchup brand) is worth a visit just to see the magnificent 73-feet high stained-glass transept windows. Close inspection of the windows will reveal that they reflect character trait, include secular figures and give man and women equal representation. Henry John Heinz intended for the chapel to honor the memory of his mother and her commitment to religion, education and community, and it certainly has.
The building is designed in the neo-Gothic style, with Indiana limestone vaults, Vermont slate flooring, local oak woodwork and a 4272 -pipe organ. Inspect the stonework, which commemorates religious figures as well as icons of education and leadership. King David is there, as is Abraham Lincoln, da Vinci, and Emerson as well as insignia's of leading European Universities. If you are looking for a stained glass image of Confucius - this is the place.
The interdenominational chapel is open to all and hosts multiple events daily. Heinz Memorial Chapel is located on 5th and S. Bellefield Avenue on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
