Explore the restored country estate of Albert Gallatin, best remembered for his 13-year tenure as Secretary of the Treasury during the Jefferson and Madison administrations. Friendship Hill National Historic Site, near Pittsburgh, PA, is your opportunity to travel back in time and enjoy the great estate of this influential statesman.
When Gallatin first came to the area in 1784, he believed that the rich land of the west held the key to his wealth. Years later, his instinct proved correct—he personally reduced the national debt, purchased the Louisiana Territory and funded the Lewis and Clark exploration. His great contributions are highlighted in his restored country estate, Friendship Hill. Today, the 661 acres of woods and meadows are being restored to the their former healthy state and visitors can tour the historic house and listen to the 45 minute, self-guided audio house tour, as well as see a presentation called "Reflections of Gallatin." Exhibits include the rooms and some furnishings relating to the period of Gallatin's life when the addition was built and during the summer season, there are ranger-led house tours offered daily with concerts, special programs and lectures on weekends. Outdoorsy types will love the ten miles of nature trails here, which offer a glimpse of the natural world of the Allegheny Plateau, and there's a picnic area adjacent to the main parking area when you're ready to re-fuel. Be sure to set aside at least one hour for your visit.
To get here from downtown Pittsburgh, take US 51 South to Uniontown US 119 South to Point Marion PA 166 North. Park entrance will be on your left three miles north of Point Marion. Enjoy your pleasant day at this beautiful historic estate while learning about the man who built it and who helped build up the U.S. economy.
