Our History Buff Says:

There are few things that capture the mind and imagination like a waterfall. The power and majesty of a seemingly endless stream of water pouring downwards from a dizzying height thrills us when we behold it and the temptation to go over it and be one with it is the stuff adventure movies are made of. But imagine actually living in harmony with one, your house and nature a single entity. If the thought of a house built over an active waterfall sounds like a fantastic proposition, you won't want to miss Fallingwater.

Designed by one of America's premier architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, this historic house, intended as a vacation home for its owners. It is fully and organically integrated with its natural surroundings. In places, the natural rock breaks through the house and is used as an integral part of it, functionally and stylistically. Glass is caulked to the stone itself without intervening metal frames for a stunning finish. An interior staircase leads down into an active rushing stream. Although recent reinforcements to the structure have been necessary to deal with the problem of water damage which Lloyd was faced with from the start, the structure has not been significantly changed since Wright's time.

There are many different guided tours of the house and grounds, each one catering to specific needs and interests, including the In-Depth Tour, Landscape Tour, Family Tour, Sunday Brunch Tour, and Sunset Tour. Note that not all tours allow photography and not all tours are available at all times of the year. If you are bringing children along, take into consideration that different tours have different age requirements so it's best to check in advance. Tickets may be purchased in advance and for some tours advance reservation is required. Ideally reservations should be made a month or two in advance to assure a spot in the tour of your choice. Tickets may be ordered online or by phone at 724-329-8501.

In addition to tours of the house you may choose to make a full day of exploring the area, combining the tour with hikes of nearby Bear Run Nature Reserve and a relaxing lunch at the Fallingwater Cafe.

Fallingwater is located between the villages of Mill Run and Ohiopyle on PA Route 381. From Philadelphia, take the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) west to exit 91 (Donegal). Make a left onto Route 31 east and then a right onto Route 381 south (after 2 miles). Route 381 will bring you to Fallingwater after about 19 miles. So plan early, bring comfortable walking shoes and come see the house that gives "living on the edge" a whole new meaning!
