Things to do / Travel Guide
In the southwest Pennsylvania region, the Pittsburgh area will delight all animal fans with its two major zoo destinations.
Like the name says, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium showcases both land and sea animals. One of the highlights in the aquarium is a clear tunnel through which children can crawl while watching stingrays swimming alongside. Among the exciting exhibits at the zoo are the Cheetah Valley and the Asian Forest, where the Siberian tiger and the highly-endangered Amur leopard are on display. Another highlight is the zoo's well-stocked African Savanna area. There are also 40 aquatic exhibits to see, including the 100,000-gallon Open Ocean Tank full of fish, (simulated) coral, and sharks, combining to form a diverse underwater ecosystem.
The National Aviary is another “must-see” adventure. Over 600 birds representing more than 200 species can be seen here, including the Hooded Merganser from North America and the Cedar Waxwing and Boat-Billed Heron from the South American tropics. Among the highlights is a tropical rainforest, manifested in the wetlands of the Americas' 200,000-cubic foot walk-through exhibit.
