Shopping in Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania

Things to do / Travel Guide

From chic boutiques and specialty shops, open-air markets, used bookstores and vintage clothing stores, Pittsburgh is the best place to go in southwestern Pennsylvania to fill your shopping cart.

Shopping around Shadyside

The neighborhood of Shadyside (Walnut Street, east of Oakland neighborhood) is decidedly upscale with boutiques and specialty stores, including such novelties as the much-needed doggie bakery. Station Square, on the South Side of Pittsburgh, is a beautifully refurbished turn-of-the-century railroad terminal and features over 60 different shops and a wide variety of handmade crafts and locally inspired items.
Also on the South Side, along Carson Street, you'll find vintage and used clothing shops, funky bead shops, and endearing used bookstores, as well as hardcore punk shops with everything from body piercing accessories to black leather.

Shopping around the Strip District

For outdoor markets, head to the Strip District on Small Street and Penn Avenue from 16th Street to 22nd Street. While the open-air market is open everyday, Saturday mornings are especially bustling with Italian food supplies, fresh cheese, fish markets, and fruit and flower vendors displaying their goods on the sidewalks. While in the Strip, make sure to stop off at the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company on Penn Avenue. “Penny Mac,” as the locals call it, is a unique Italian shop (founded in 1902) with a mountain of fresh cheeses, hanging sausages and salamis, and buckets of pickles and olives. Highland Park, in Pittsburgh, also has a farmer's market open April through November, featuring fresh produce and homemade specialty treats.

If you want to spruce up your living quarters you'll be glad to know that beyond the Strip District near Butler Street and Penn Avenue is 16:62 Design Zone, over 85 businesses offering unique antiques, trinkets, and home furnishings.

Triple B and Trax Farms

If you feel like a rural shopping expedition, head to Triple B Farms in Monongahela, PA, and Trax Farms in Finleyville, PA. Triple B Farms is primarily a berry farm with a farmer's market selling jams, relishes, and freshly-baked pies. Open in the fall, spring, and summer, Triple B Farms also has a gift shop that sells handcrafts made by local artisans and even farm-related toys and books for children. Trax Farms is open year-round and sells a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as homemade baked goods, jams, jellies, and cheeses.
