Off the Beaten Path in Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania

Things to do / Travel Guide

Pittsburgh has lots of unique attractions that many tourists often miss - but you shouldn't!

The Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning in Pittsburgh

The Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh campus (at Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard) has created 26 Nationality Rooms on the first and third floors of the building that are a favorite among visitors and residents alike. Each of these intriguing rooms is dedicated to one of the nationalities that have helped mold Pittsburgh's culture. Among the cultures represented are: Chinese, Greek, Indian, Irish, Israeli, Italian, Japanese, and Russian. The Nationality Rooms also have beautifully designed and authentic recreations of Classical, Byzantine, Romanesque, and Tudor styles and architecture. Mid-November through January the Nationality Rooms are decked out for the holiday season. To visit the Nationality Rooms, take a tour seven days a week in the morning or early afternoon. Admission is quite inexpensive.

The Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh

The last place you will fall asleep is The Mattress Factory, a unique, contemporary art museum located in several buildings in the historic Mexican War Streets neighborhood of Pittsburgh's North Side. The spaces are considered the most unique displays of contemporary installation art in the United States and features room-size installation pieces created by artists-in-residence from around the world. The artists live, create, and sleep at the museum, transforming rooms into sometimes-strange, sometimes-avant-garde, and always interesting artistic expressions. Artists are encouraged to use non-traditional materials to transform the rooms, and many have: damp earth, beer cans, and literally tons of apple candy have all been incorporated into the Mattress Factory's fun and eccentric exhibits.
