Boating and Cruises in Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania

Things to do / Travel Guide

When you start feeling land-bound and the only remedy is to get out on the water, southwestern Pennsylvania has a couple of “self-skippered” boating options that may whet, or should we say “wet,” your appetite.

Pleasure Boating around Pittsburgh

If you would like to spend a pleasant afternoon touring Pittsburgh, while also avoiding all the traffic, try renting a hydrobike, a unique paddleboat ridden much like a bicycle. Kayak Pittsburgh rents hydrobikes for touring on the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio Rivers from the beginning of May to the end of October. Kayak Pittsburgh is located beneath the Roberto Clemente Bridge (6th Street Bridge) on the waterfront walkway, just near PNC Park. Hydrobike rentals cost between $10-$15 an hour.

Pleasure Boating around the Youghiogheny River Lake

With crystal-clear waters and steep valleys, the Youghiogheny River Lake snakes 16 miles from just below Confluence, Pennsylvania, beyond the Mason-Dixon Line and the Maryland-Pennsylvania-West Virginia state line meeting point. While boat rentals are difficult to come by, owners of motorboats and jet skis consider the Youghiogheny River Lake's wide channels some of the best places in southwestern Pennsylvania for pleasure boating and water skiing. Boat launching sites are convenient; small boats and personal watercraft can navigate for five or more miles continuously without any speed restrictions. Boat launches around Ohiopyle State Park are available at Mill Run Campground, Somerfield North, Somerfield South, Tub Run Campground, and the Spillway Recreation Area. Fees and restrictions vary.
