More than a dozen active volcanoes and archeological sites preserving about 900 prehistoric human dwellings make Katmai a very unique destination. Huge, clear lakes, majestic mountains, and the rugged Alaskan coastline add to the park's significance. A major 1912 eruption of Novarupta formed the extraordinary area now known as the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Katmai is also famous for salmon and enormous brown bears (weighing in at up to 900 pounds).
The park protects the largest population of brown bears in the world. The Brooks Camp section of the park is the most popular location for bear viewing (there are actually three special elevated platforms designated just for this purpose). Sport fishing, hiking, backpacking, and boating activities are very popular within the park in the warmer months.
