Weather in Kodiak and the Aleutian Islands of Southwest Alaska

Things to do / Travel Guide

Winters in southwest Alaska are characterized by particularly stormy weather. Biting winds, heavy snowfall, and blizzards with large amounts of snow and sleet are common throughout the long winter. Spring is typically cold and damp, with chronic drizzling throughout the season. Summers are milder, but rain and wind still don't let the region warm up much. Temperstures drop again in the fall, and the conditions are cool and very wet. Generally, the further away you are in the region from mainland Alaska, the colder the temperature is likely to be.

The warm Japan Current constantly flows in from the southwest into the freezing waters of the Bering Sea. This unhealthy mixture makes for some of the worst weather conditions in the world. The terrible weather includes long periods in which the Aleutian Islands are engulfed in a wet, damp fog.
“Willowaws” (violent squalls on the coast) are common, as are low clouds, a lack of sunshine, high winds, and large amounts of precipitation throughout the year
