Things to do / Travel Guide
Enjoy the scenic wonders of southeastern Utah! From hiking and climbing the La Sal and Abajo mountain ranges, to fishing and scenic drives along the Wasatch Plateau, there's something for everyone to enjoy at Manti-La Sal National Forest!
The three separate mountain blocks of Manti-La Sal National Forest provide cool islands of green rising above the dusty desert. The majestic Abajo Mountains, locally known as the Blue Mountains, which rise 11,360 ft. above sea level, have red rock plateaus just west of the town of Monticello, and besides their incredible scenic beauty, they are rich in history with pictographs, petroglyphs, cliff dwellings, arrowheads and pottery left by the Anasazi.
Visitors to the Manti-La Sal National Forest can enjoy trails and rock climbing, and the Huntington and Eccles Canyon Scenic Byways are great for the whole family to enjoy scenic drives, as is the Utah Adventure Highway (also known as Skyline Drive) which stretches across the forest. The forest also contains two National Recreation Trails, which are open to foot and horse travel and provide access to some quality fly fishing opportunities. Fisherman will also enjoy trout fishing in beautiful mountain lakes, reservoirs, and mountain streams as well as Joe's Valley on the Ferron/Price Ranger District, a 1200 acre reservoir which offers fishing for splake, as well as motor boating opportunities. If visiting in the winter, the mountains provide snow for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling that's second to none! For visitors who want to extend their visit, camping is available in more than 25 developed campgrounds as well as in more remote locations.
The Manti-La Sal National Forest lies in central and southeastern Utah, and the southern sections are located near Canyonlands and Arches National Parks and Natural Bridges National Monument.
