The stunning landscape of endless canyons carved into the Colorado Plateau by the Green and Colorado Rivers, deep river gorges, and colorful limestone combine to form a giant playground for exploring, hiking, climbing, rugged backpacking, and more. If you have just one day to visit, Island of the Sky, a vast mesa in the northern section of the park, will prove a worthy choice, with its extraordinary scenic views and easily-accessible trails. The Horseshoe Canyon section of the park is home to amazing rock art created by early hunter-gatherers, sheer sandstone walls, and spring wildflowers. The most impressive and well-known site in Horseshoe is the Great Gallery, a large rock panel within the canyon.
The remote Maze area is great for visitors who have at least three days to explore and who are looking for a unique camping adventure. The Needles district, in the southeast corner of Canyonlands, is made up of red and white naturally-sculpted rock formations and impressive arches. Bring your bikes and your backpacks along and plan as much time as possible for this fascinating canyon experience.
From Canyonlands National Park - Moab, Utah:
Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas, and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. The Colorado and Green rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the rivers themselves. While the districts share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character and offers different opportunities for exploration and learning.
