Bryce Canyon, a huge, brightly colored natural amphitheater, has to be one of the most beautiful and inspirational places on the entire planet. Bryce is famous for its amazing "hoodoo" rock structures formed by erosion and other geological forces over millions of years. You could easily roam this stunning expanse for a week or more. If you have just a day, try a scenic drive to Bryce, Sunrise, Sunset, and Inspiration viewpoints. There are several short (around a mile or less), spectacular hikes available such as Upper Inspiration Point, Mossy Cave, and the very popular Navajo Loop. For serious hikers looking to spend the night, backcountry permits are needed. Low light pollution makes stargazing a very fun and popular activity in the park and several astronomy programs are sponsored by Bryce throughout the year. In winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing dominate. The park has great special programs for kids and families, too.
From Bryce Canyon National Park - Utah:
Bryce Canyon, famous for its worldly unique geology, consists of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah. The erosional force of frost-wedging and the dissolving power of rainwater have shaped the colorful limestone rock of the Claron Formation into bizarre shapes including slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called "hoodoos."
