A famous Mormon figure is Jacob Hamblin (1819-1886), who was an early convert to Mormonism and a pioneer who settled in the surrounding St. George area. He is known for acting as a liaison between the native tribes of Utah and Arizona and the white settlers in the region. He believed that God instructed him to be a messenger of peace to the Native Americans.
His house, the Jacob Hamblin Home, located in Santa Clara, is a two story adobe built of sandstone and pine. The site, one of the earliest surviving examples of pioneer architecture in the area, has been restored and filled with interesting pioneer artifacts and is open for daily tours all year round. Tours are led by Mormon missionaries.
