Fiery Furnace is an exceptional maze of sandstone fins in Arches National Park. It includes an incredible labyrinth of red and orange colorful slick rock in the spectacular Arches National Park, which boasts the highest density of sandstone arches in the world. Some of the walls in Fiery Furnace are more than 200 feet tall limiting sunlight to the sandy wash bottoms. Within this maze there are hidden arches, spires and grottos created by erosion of wind and water. It is truly a geologists dream come true!
Since it is very easy to become lost and disoriented in this area, visiting Fiery Furnace requires obtaining a special permit (a permit is available only for experienced hikers familiar with this area) or joining a ranger guided hike. Three hour guided hikes to Fiery Furnace, which are moderately easy are offered from mid-March to October twice a day. These hikes are two miles long (loop trail) and require scrambling through narrow cracks and ledges. Elevation gain is minimal – around 150 feet. Tours are extremely fun and are a great way for less experienced hikers to experience the novelty and wonders of the Fiery Furnace.
Since Fiery Furnace hikes are very popular and fill up quickly, it is advised to register at the visitor center a day or two in advance. Registration is possible only in person (no phone reservations are accepted) and no more than seven days in advance. A fee is charged for these hikes (kids up to 6 years old are free). Have fun exploring these unique trails!
