Out of all the 2,000 sandstone arches in Arches National Park, Delicate Arch is without a doubt the most famous. The arch rises from a bare sandstone slope, faces stunning views, and has become a symbol of Southern Utah – it's even won a prized spot on the Utah license plate!
The opening of Delicate Arch is huge – 33 feet in width and 45 feet in height. It was formed by weathering and erosion in the Entrada Sandstone, and is famed due to its dramatic location and fragile nature. Visitors come from all over the world just to get that perfect shot of Delicate Arch with the snowcapped 13,000 feet La Sal Mountains in the background. This hike should definitely be top priority for those visiting Arches National Park.
The Delicate Arch hike is three miles long (in and out). This is a moderate level hike with an elevation gain of nearly 500 feet, making it a perfect adventure for families with kids. The first half mile of the trail is mostly level following a gradual descent on slick rock. This scenic trail starts at the Wolf Ranch in Arches National Park. During summer this trail is very hot and exposed, so make sure you bring a ton of water! During winter this trail may be slippery and icy. Get updated about current conditions in the Visitor Center located at the entrance to the park off Highway 191.
