Things to do / Travel Guide
With all the towering rock formations, slick deep rock canyons, and majestic mountain slopes of the southern Utah region, it's no wonder the family may want to let loose on some less intimidating features - swing sets, tennis courts, and plenty of wide open spaces.
Public Recreational Parks in Moab
Swanny City Park is not just your typical playground; it is the site of arts festivals, farmers markets, and events throughout the year. Located in downtown Moab, the seven-acre park has a large playground, barbecue grills, covered picnic tables, a gazebo, a rose garden, and lots of wide open green space and trees for shade. It is also the location of Moab's skate park, which is open to bikers, skaters, and roller bladers.
Center Street Ball Park offers four regulation-sized ball fields in the heart of the city. The park hosts softball, Little League, baseball, soccer, and football games and it is managed by the city recreation department. Lions Park offers picnicking along the Colorado River about two miles north of town, and Mill Creek Parkway is a quiet recreational path designed for slow-moving bicycles, walkers, roller bladers, and pedestrians. The trail follows a creek in the shade of cottonwood and hackberry trees and it is reportedly a great place for bird watching as well. The trail ends at Rotary Park, which has a children's playground complete with giant xylophones and other instruments for visitors to make their own music.
Public Recreational Parks in Cedar City
Cedar City has a plethora of parks. Main Street Park boasts all the basics: picnic tables, playgrounds, volleyball nets, and horseshoe pitches. Canyon Park hosts tennis courts for those visitors looking to practice their serve. Bicentennial Park has playground equipment, barbecue pits, and picnic areas; a great place for an afternoon cookout with the kids.
Cedar City also has Exit 59 Skateboard Park, which features some awesome ramps and plenty of other apparatuses on which to turn tricks. And Park Discovery offers a little something special for the whole family, including a science playground, dinosaur sand pit, and amphitheater.
Public Recreational Parks in St. George
Picnic tables and playgrounds are the primary offerings at Vernon Worthen and J.C. Snow Parks in St. George, but public tennis courts at Vernon Worthen Park mean parents can hit the courts while the kids hit the slides.
