Tubing in Southern Utah
Whether it's on the snow or down a river, tubing is a great enjoyable activity in the southern Utah region. Tubing is available in the winter in Brian Head near the ski slopes, and the sand dunes of Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park become a prime snow tubing site in the winter, when the sands become a sea of snow. Visitors can stop by Springdale in the summer, where road-side stands rent inner tubes for floating down the Virgin River.
Canyoneering in Southern Utah
Canyoneering is not as intimidating as it sounds. It is an adventurous way to explore the canyons, nooks, and many crannies that characterize the rocky southern Utah region. Canyoneering combines hiking, rock scrambling, rappelling, descending into narrow slot canyons with ropes, and the occasional wading and swimming through water. It can range from relaxed strolls through canyon terrain suitable for small children, to technically challenging explorations that involve wetsuits, ropes, and some discomfort as you attempt to squeeze through narrow spots.
The area surrounding Zion National Park has some of the best canyoneering in the country, making this a great regional activity. Canyons of the Escalante are also a great spot for the activity, where lush greenery can be found between soaring sandstone walls. No experience is necessary. For gentle trails, equipment and/or guides may not be required. More-challenging routes may call for helmets, harnesses, and rappelling equipment, available at local rock climbing and mountaineering outfitters, where you can also hire a guide. Adventure and canyoneering companies provide guided tours led by professionals, offering all the expertise and equipment you will need.
