For over fifty years, the Miami Science Museum has been entertaining, educating, and expanding our minds and knowledge of the universe. The museum houses numerous exhibits from Dinosaurs to Newton, a Planetarium with breathtaking lasers, and a hands-on Natural Wildlife Centre. With all this and more, the museum is a sure hit with everyone.
For starters, the museum's Planetarium has a 65-foot diameter domed projection screen and holds 231 stargazers. SPITZ, the "Space Transit Planetarium" projector is capable of reproducing stars and planets as seen from any point on earth, at any time during the year. The mysterious sky will come to life with lasers and music, sure to brighten everybody's day. The Miami Science Museum's Weintraub Observatory (open 8-10pm) has two powerful Meade telescopes, for those looking to see things as the professionals do.
A special exhibit includes the "Dinosaurs of China". Gaze upon 14 enormous dinosaur skeletons and 52 other specimens, including eight feathered dinosaurs from the fossil beds at Liaoning, China. Combined with a children's paleo-discovery area, interactive and multimedia shows, the dinosaurs will truly come alive for all spectators.
Don't miss the Natural Wildlife Centre where all sorts of reptiles and endangered wild birds are housed. Daily live-shows with hands-on experience are not to be missed, especially the Crocodile & Alligator show, where visitors will learn everything there is to know about Florida's most notorious beasts.
Other exhibits include Coral Reefs, Gravity & Newton, space infected astronauts requiring your help, and stunning pictures of how the world looks from the view of a Condor soaring high above. There is also an esteemed museum store, filled with unique science, earth, and space related items.
The Miami Science Museum is located just north of Coconut Grove across from Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. From the north: Take I-95 to Exit #1A/SW 25 Road. Keep in the right hand lane and follow the signs to the Museum/Planetarium. From the south, follow U.S. 1 and make a right just before the split with I-95. From Metrorail, exit at the Vizcaya Station and cross U.S. 1 via the pedestrian overpass.
