The Historical Museum of Southern Florida encompasses the rich history, culture, folk life, and archeology of South Florida and the Caribbean area. You'll find exhibits focusing on Native Americans such as the Seminoles and Miccosukees, as well as exhibits on aviation and maritime history, all coming together to shape Florida into the great state that it is today.

The permanent exhibit "Tropical Dreams: A People's History of South Florida", explores five periods in the history of Florida, from the first arrivals, to International Rivalry, Southward, Expansion, and New people - New Technologies and Gateway of the Americas. This exhibit showcases 10,000 years of history and highlights the continual drive of people to build their dream in South Florida.

The Miami Centennial Quilt is the result of the Centennial Quilt Project, a joint venture of the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and The Quilt Scene which began in 1995. Quilters were invited to submit a quilt block that depicted some aspect of Miami's history. The result is a colorful piece that reflects the quilters' personal records on the history of the region that can be preserved for future generations.

You won't want to miss the Pan Am Collection of artifacts and other memorabilia, including flight crew uniforms, accouterments, model planes, plaques, and navigational instruments.

The Historical Museum of Southern Florida has a lovely store selling books on architecture, archaeology, aviation, Florida, art, Miami, railways, and more.

The museum is easily reached from the I-95 by exiting onto NW 2nd St (Exit 2B) and turning right for one block onto NW 2nd Ave. From the south, exit at NW 8th St (Exit 3B Port of Miami) and turn left onto NW 2nd St and right onto NW 2nd Ave. You can take the Metrorail by exiting at Government Center Station and walking south across NW1st St. to Miami-Dade Cultural Center.
