See a real Jim Crow coach and FDR's private rail-car! A must-see for history and railroad buffs alike, Gold Coast Railroad Museum is both a walk through history and a tribute to the great mode of transportation!
Formed in 1957 by a group of Miamian's trying to save precious pieces of Florida history, Gold Coast Railroad Museum is a tribute to all things railroad-related. Spanning 58 acres, Gold Coast is located on the site of a former Naval Air Station, which played a crucial role in helping the U.S. Navy protect shipping in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean during World War II. Some of the earliest pieces in the museum's collection are the "Ferdinand Magellan," the private railroad car built for President Franklin Roosevelt and the Florida East Coast Railway locomotive #153, the engine that pulled the rescue train out of Marathon, Florida after the 1935 hurricane. Visitors can tour the air station, and get an up-close look at other historical railroad pieces, such as the Florida East Coast Railway Steam Locomotives 113 and 153, California Zephyr Cars Crescent and Silver Stag, a 'Jim Crow' coach and the children's railroad.
Families will enjoy the free ride on the Edwin Link, 2-ft gauge train on Wednesdays during January & February. Remember to arrive on time, as trains depart at 11 a.m. & 1 p.m. sharp. Gold Coast Railroad museum is conveniently located next door to the Miami MetroZoo, and can be easily reached by public transportation via Bus Route 252 (Coral Reef MAX) which stops at the entrance to the Museum as it enters the Metrozoo complex. Bus 252 leaves from the Metrorail Dadeland South station seven days a week.
From Gold Coast Railroad Museum:
The history of today's Gold Coast Railroad Museum is rather unique. The coming together of persons and events in a rare mix that helped shape today's premier railroad museum in the state of Florida and one of the finer rail museums in the United States.
