Visit the largest 20th century built National Register Historic District in the nation, with over 800 historic buildings built during the 20s and 30s, featuring a variety of architectural styles! Dedicated to protecting the buildings that best represent Miami's classic architecture, the art deco district buildings are true treasures which have influenced other buildings all over the world!
The first of the famed Art Deco buildings of Miami Beach were completed in the 1920s during Prohibition. During this time, South Beach became synonymous with liquor and gambling and attracted major Prohibition gangsters like Al Capone. Today, almost all of the original buildings including the Hotel Astor, The Indian Creek Hotel, Island Outpost Hotels, Miami Beach Ocean Resort, and the ultra hip Delano, have been restored and painted in colorful pastels against the bright Miami sky. The Art Deco Welcome Center introduces visitors to the historic district, providing literature and walking tours and of course, a great gift shop. The Ocean Drive and Beyond tour is a 90 minute introduction to the Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern styles found within the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. The Collins Park tour explores the newest of Miami Beach's local historic districts, and the grand hotels of Collins Avenue that epitomize the glamour of 1940s South Beach. Make sure you also sign up for the "Underworld Tour" which takes you to former hotspots of illegal activity like Al Capone's office. So whatever your style, you're sure to find a tour to suit your taste in the Historic Art Deco District!
The Art Deco Welcome Center and Gift Shop is found at 1001 Ocean Drive, at the intersection of Ocean Drive and 10tj Street, in Miami Beach. Parking is not available at the Center, but there are plenty of municipal parking garages in the area. Style is the defining feature of these tours, so get dressed up and make a day of it dining at fine restaurants in the area, shopping, and doing some fashionable touring!
