Things to do / Travel Guide
Known as the Sunshine State, the skies of southern Florida are typically just that: clear and sunny. While the weather is warm all year round, conditions vary from clear and dry to humid with thunderstorms, depending on the season. On a peninsula jutting out between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, south Florida is a high-risk hurricane area from June-November.
There's a reason the birds head to south Florida for the winter, as dry, clear, blue skies can be expected and counted on throughout the season. Whatever brief cold spells blow in are short-lived due to the plentiful sunshine in the region. Spring brings even warmer temperatures with long stretches of dry and sunny weather. The scorching summer heat, when combined with the area's very high humidity, can be quite stifling, but it is broken up by brief almost-daily thunderstorms. While the warm, sunny weather extends into the fall, the area is at risk of hurricanes from June-November. During the summer hurricane season, severe storms can interrupt public services, while mosquitoes have been known to swarm the area around the Everglades.
