Things to do / Travel Guide

Public Transportation from Miami to Fort Lauderdale

Public transportation is spotty in South Florida. Bus service is pretty inefficient and taxis can usually only be found in busy locations or by phoning up a local service. Miami does have a intra-city fixed rail system. There is also an inter-county rail service linking Miami to West Palm Beach. Fort Lauderdale also has a water taxi service, as does Miami by the Bayside Marketplace. These water taxi services are excellent for local transportation along the waterfronts. As there are limited public transportation options, and as the region's attractions are somewhat spread out, a car rental is advisable here.

If you really want to impress people in Miami's South Beach, you probably need to rent a Lamborghini Gallardo. Seriously, it is best to leave the car in the lot and enjoy Miami Beach on foot, by local bus or by cab. If you insist and have about $1000/day to spare you can rent a Rolls or a Ferrari. Miami Beach is not the place for your Dodge Dart Swinger. The “My Other Car is a Ferrari” bumper stickers won't make you lots of friends in SoBe.

Airport Transportation from MIA to Miami

SuperShuttle shared ride vans serve MIA with coverage of the greater Miami area, south to Homestead and north to Fort Lauderdale. The rate for a single passenger from the airport to Miami Beach is about $20. A cab will cost at least twice that.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is accessible by public transportation via the Tri-Rail Airport shuttle, which leaves MIA for the 5 minute ride to the Tri-Rail Airport Station or by a 25 minute walk. Tri-Rail serves destinations north of Miami, including Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Tri-Rail connects to Metrorail, which serves Miami, but not Miami Beach.

Key West and Miami Driving Directions

Taking a trip down to Key West, alone, is enough of a reason to rent a car in South Florida. The experience of traversing the over water highway there, especially the famous Seven Mile Bridge, makes this route an absolute must while in the region.

The car rental industry in South Florida is very competitive. In addition, there is a modern and large highway system in South Florida with some toll roads, notably the Florida Turnpike. Naturally, there is some typical urban traffic within the cities, particularly around Miami, but inter-city routes are usually clear of traffic.
