If staring at enough concrete to build a sidewalk three feet wide, four inches thick around the world at the equator sounds like your idea of a good time, then Shasta Dam is the place for you!
Shasta Dam, completed in 1945, is the second largest dam in the United States, after the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington. The face of the dam is as big as six football stadiums – including the bleachers! The Dam spillway is the largest man-made waterfall in the world – three times the height of Niagara Falls! Bring earplugs, because the sound of the water crashing down can be deafening!
Besides the Dam, Shasta Lake has plenty of fun-filled activities that the whole family can enjoy. You can go swimming, waterskiing, or fishing on the lake, and there are motels and boathouses available for rent. There are plenty of places to stay, ranging from small hotels to full fledged vacation resorts. If roughing it is more your thing, Shasta Lake is one of the few campsites in California that allows camping right on the shore! So pitch your tent, and bring your camera, because you're about to have a great time!
Dam guided tours are available every day from 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm, take approximately one hour, and are highly recommended! Take Interstate 5 and get off at Shasta Dam Blvd. (exit 685), and continue west for just over five miles on highway 151. You can't miss it!
