Our Ski Specialist Says:

A soul skier's paradise, and ultimate backcountry skiing experience, awaits those who brave the drive and setting up of the base camp in order to get to Mount Shasta's Hotlum-Wintun Ridge in the Southern Cascade Mountains. This is pure volcanic and glacier skiing and snowboarding at its best. Located right in between the Hotlum and Wintun Glaciers, the ridge offers intermediate and advanced riders a ride like no other.

Only 50 miles south of the California-Oregon border and Redding, California, the Hotlum-Wintun Ridge is not for the faint of heart. After acquiring the required Summit Pass from the ranger station in the town of Mount Shasta, make your way through the Military Road and set up camp at about 8500 feet to prepare yourself for the climb.

No chairlift exists here. Relying only on your own two feet and stamina, you must ascend to the mountain's 14,132 foot summit. 20 to 30 foot drifts of snow at the 7,000-8,000 foot level is not uncommon, so bring appropriate gear with you for this expedition. When you reach the summit, gaze in awe at the 360 degree views of Southern Oregon, the Trinity Alps, and Lassen Peak. The best time to come to Mount Shasta's Hotlum-Wintun ridge is anywhere from May to mid-June, and make sure you bring your camera to capture this moment.

At the 11,400 to 12,400 foot level, intermediate skiers and snowboarders will find intermediate terrain and natural bowls to sink into. From that point to the summit, this terrain is only recommended for those advanced and expert skies and snowboarders. As there is no ski patrol on daily duty, take care of the fault lines and be aware of avalanche possibilities. Carry a personal walkie-talkie with proper range, and do not skip checking in at the ranger station. In case of an emergency, it's critical that someone be aware that you are out there.

So for one of the best ski and snowboard descents in California, strap your equipment to your back, slather on the sunscreen, dress to stay warm and start your ascent up Mount Shasta. It'll be an experience you won't soon forget to brag about.
