A visit to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in northern California is the perfect retreat for the weekend, the week, or even longer. As you can imagine, most of the park's recreational activities are based around the glittering blue Whiskeytown Lake. All types of boating are popular on the lake and free kayaking tours are offered from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
Don't miss out on the park's great hiking trails and the hidden 300-foot-high Whiskeytown Falls which provide a well-deserved reward after the mile-and-a-half trek through the wooded forests (although the Falls are currently closed except on guided ranger tours).
In a fitting tribute to California's Gold Rush days, the park offers gold panning and educational signs around the Camden House built in the 1850s. Whiskeytown is open year round.
