Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:

Mulholland Drive is a scenic, well-known road in Los Angeles, California, made famous in several movies, hit songs, and video games, and home to many celebrities. The mostly two-lane, minor arterial road loosely follows the ridgeline of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Hollywood Hills and is known to have the most beautiful views between Encino and Hollywood.

Named after engineer William Mulholland, the drive lent its name to the movies Mulholland Dr. and Mulholland Falls. In the film Death Becomes Her, Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn's characters send Meryl Streep's character off of a cliff on Mulholland Drive. The road is also mentioned in Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'" and R.E.M.'s "Electrolite," among other artists' songs. The road is also celebrated in a ride at Disneyland's California Adventure, Mulholland Madness, and In the hot-rod-themed videogame Street Rod II.

Mulholland Drive is nicknamed "Bad Boy Drive" for its famous residents: Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Errol Flynn and the late Marlon Brando. When you take the scenic drive, roll down the windows and feel the wind in your hair, capturing the excitement of this famous byway.

Mulholland Drive winds along the top of the mountains until a few miles west of the 405 Freeway. At this point, at the intersection with Encino Hills Drive, the route becomes an unpaved road closed to motor vehicles. It is popular with hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers, and offers connections to other unpaved fire roads and mountain bike trails in the hills. The evening hours are a great time to see the views, when the light is at its most beautiful.
