Our Sports Superfan Says:

In addition to all the standard attractions of a county fair, Fairplex Park near Los Angeles also offers some exciting horse racing. As part of the Los Angeles County Fair, the park holds nearly three weeks of thoroughbred racing for fairgoers to enjoy each September.

Racing is held live during the fair every day but Tuesday (the fair itself being closed on both Monday and Tuesday). Post time is 1 p.m. during the week, and 12 noon from Friday-Sunday. Fairplex, opened in 1922, and in 1933 became the first track in southern California to have pari-mutuel betting. The track is so popular in its limited season, in fact, that over $100 million was wagered in 2006, including more than $10 million in one day. In addition to the live racing, there is also simulcasting offered throughout the rest of the year, although not every day. You can check the park's Web site for each month's schedule.

Fairplex Park and the L.A. County Fair are located in Pomona, California, about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The Metrolink commuter rail service's Riverside and San Bernardino lines both stop in the city.
