Just forty five miles from the congested city of Los Angeles and beach going Orange County in Claremont, is the family owned and operated ski resort known as Mount Baldy. Funny name aside, this mountain is anything but bald. The average snowfall here is 170 inches, and with an impressive 26 trails spread over 3 mountain tops, this 800 plus acres of skiable terrain is nothing to laugh about.
The mountain's elevation tops out at 8600 feet, and the vertical drop is no less than 2100 feet, meaning that when the snow is right, the steep runs give the experienced skier a challenging ride. Southern California is known for its inconsistent snowfall rate, so Mt. Baldy relies on the usage of snowmaking guns and creative grooming techniques ensure the operation of as many trails as possible. Note that some of the trails face to the West and South, which can cause the snow to melt and turn icy as the weather gets warmer.
Open from 8AM to 4:30PM weekdays, and a half hour earlier on the weekends, four chairlifts whisk you off to the various beginning, intermediate, and double black diamond runs. You can start off with "Beginner's Gulch", then take a flush down the "Toilet Bowl" and ride the "Skyline" straight into "Bentley's Dream".
Ski school offers ski or snowboard lessons for every level from beginner to advanced, enabling you to gain new skills or improve on what you already know. There is no cross country or snowshoeing here – only pure alpine skiing at your feet. The lifts may be a little slow as there are no high-speed lifts here, but lines are almost non-existent. There is a full rental and repair shop available on-premises that carries ski equipment for all ages, and also rents snowboards for a daily fee.
For those of you on a snowboard, Mt. Baldy offers a terrain park and halfpipe to shred the day away on. Snowboarders are welcome on all trails, but a leash is required in order to ride safely.
Children 6 and under ski free with a paying adult, and senior citizens receive discounts at the ticket desk. You may schedule "Back Side Tours" with the reservation desk to see what untracked conditions are up for exploration with qualified guides. There is a restaurant and bar or quick food café located at the top of the mountain for when your energy starts to run low.
At the end of the day, when your body is craving a place to rest and relax, head on over to Mt. Baldy Lodge, located on site and owned by the same family. 6 cabins are for rent, each featuring a fireplace, and T1 internet is available for an extra fee. There is family dining offered or you can reserve a romantic dinner for two. Don't miss out on the live, local music found in the Mt. Baldy Lodge or the Fire Department steak fry that happens seasonally!
Most of the other lodging options in the area are located 8 miles away and include hotels, motels, inns, and cottages. Or head back into the big city for clubs, lounges, and a more frequented bar scene. Either way, for a quick "snowscape" in the Los Angeles area, Mt. Baldy is sure to satisfy your senses.
